Slovenia has 14 public holidays established by law. If a public holiday coincides with a scheduled working day, the employee is exempt from work and receives enhanced pay or compensatory time off at another time, depending on the agreement with the employer.

Slovenia does not operate a substitute day system. If a public holiday falls on a weekend, employees are typically not granted a replacement day off. Employers and employees may regulate this through internal arrangements or collective agreements, but there is no legal obligation to do so.

If an employee is required to work on a public holiday, the employer must provide enhanced pay under applicable law or collective agreement, typically at 50% or more. The exact percentages are determined by the Labour Relations Act or the agreement between employer and employee.

Both January 1st and January 2nd are public holidays under law. These are not a holiday and its substitute day - they are two separate public holidays, therefore both days are paid days off.

Public holidays falling during sick leave are counted as paid days for the purpose of receiving sick leave compensation. Holidays during annual leave are typically not counted as holidays and therefore do not reduce annual leave usage.
